The Grand Union
Vintage check stubs, acrylic on panel
96 x 48"
This collage is composed of paper check stubs written by my parents from the early 1950's through the mid 1980's. In the 1950's - the early years of their marriage - my parents kept meticulously detailed check-book stubs that describe many things about their life together through their various expenses. After they divorced in 1973, the stubs are only recorded in my Mother's handwriting, since she was the one who compiled and saved them. The piece is titled Grand Union as a gesture to my long-separated and now-deceased parents, and to the supermarket chain, to whom many checks were written.
